FRIENDS OF THE RIVERS OF HOUT BAY

Friends of the Rivers of Hout Bay – FORHB – is a Hout Bay, Cape Town, South African based NPO dedicated to the rehabilitation and conservation of the river system in this fragile ecological area. The approach is that of supporting, implementing and managing action projects, identified, led by and made up of volunteering members of the public (the Friends), environmental agencies, experts and official governmental and municipal partnerships.

Oceans Alive Conservation Trust in partnership with Friends of the Rivers of Hout Bay is working together to clean up our rivers and surrounding areas to avoid future pollution, remove invasive species to rehabilitate areas of the wetland and river to prevent and reverse canalization and curtail unnecessary abstraction in the river systems and wetland through various  action projects and plans.

Oceans Alive Conservation Trust is proud to sponsor the Friends of the Rivers of Hout Bay towards conserving and protecting the rivers and wetland of Hout Bay, Western Cape, South Africa.

Stronger together! Working with Friends of the Rivers of Hout Bay this is what was achieved in October 2022. Within 5 working days, workers collected 286 kg of waste. About 20% of the waste was recycled. More than 1500 kg of waste has been collected since November 2021. This is equivalent to about 60000 empty 500ml plastic bottles! Invasive species were removed from the pathway crossing the wetlands and on the river bank to the Butterfly Garden.
